There are some big names playing golf this week on the Monterey Peninsula and elsewhere at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a PGA Tour event that dates back to 1937 when Bing Crosby and his older brother Larry invited celebrities to join Tour Pros for about.
The tournament is one of two tour events (along with The American Express) in which tour pros compete with amateur partners in a separate team competition. The action takes place in three courses:Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Course and Monterey Peninsula Country Club (Shore Course), with a 54 hole cut after Saturday and the final round being played at Pebble Beach on Sunday.
Jordan Spieth, 2017 champion and seemingly always in the mix at Pebble, will be returning after a second place finish last year.Defending champion Tom Hogeand world ranking mainstays like Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland (who won the 2018 U.S. Amateur in Pebble) will compete alongside the stars this week.
Incidentally, those stars mentioned above include recently retired soccer star Gareth Bale, NFL QBs Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen, as well as high-profile names from across the cultural spectrum such as Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Eric Church and Darius Rucker. Oh, and of course Bill Murray will be there too.
The winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a share of $1.62 million of the $9 million prize pool.

Given the task of designing a course right off 17 Mile Drive from Pebble Beach and Cypress Point, Robert Trent Jones responded with a combination of Pine Valley and Augusta National. The five opening holes in Pine Valley-esque sand dunes are an all-too-brief encounter with the Pacific Coast. The remaining holes are a rigorous hike through hills covered in majestic Monterey pines (which sadly may one day fade to pitch cancer, but are being replaced by cypress in some areas). Add in several water hazards dating back to the 16th at Augusta (a hole incidentally designed by Trent Jones) and you have what some panelists consider Trent's best work. Others say never having hosted a major event is the best course. Eventually even Pine Valley and Cypress Point have hosted Walker Cups.

Mike Strantz battled cancer while transforming the boring, low-budget shore course into a scenic and strategic marvel to rival its neighbor Cypress Point. Strantz reversed the direction of the fifth through 15th holes to give most of them a Pacific Ocean backdrop. He weaved fairways between trees so players could "dance among the cypresses" and added native grasses to create a coastal prairie look. The breathtaking landscape would be Strantz's last work of art. He died six months after the redesign was completed. Former PGA Tour player Forrest Fezler, who had a hand with Strantz on the project, later served as consulting architect to sustain the Strantz vision until his death in 2018.

Not only the largest meeting of land and sea in the American Gulf, but also the most extensive with nine holes set directly above the crashing Pacific surf - the fourth through tenth, and the seventeenth and eighteenth. Pebbles sixth through eighth are golf's true amen corner, with a couple of Hail Marys thrown in across a sea bay at eighth from a 75-foot cliff. Pebble hosted a successful U.S. amateur and in 2019 a sixth U.S. Open. Recent improvements include the redesign of the once treacherous 14th green and redesign of the par 3 17th green, both planned by Arnold Palmer's Design Company a few years ago - and recent changes to the iconic eighth hole.
